Oklahoma falconry license

Checked 2026-11-04 against official sources — see the links at the bottom. General guidance only; always confirm with the state agency before you apply.

First-year fees

$45 resident / $100 nonresident falconer's license, valid three years from issuance (29 O.S. §4-108(C)); a 10-day temporary nonresident license is available for $25 (§4-108(D))

Three years from date of issuance

An Oklahoma hunting license is required in addition — plus waterfowl license, HIP permit and federal duck stamp for migratory birds.

Exam & minimum age

Exam: 80% to pass. Applicants must answer 80% of questions correctly; failed candidates may reapply after three months, and a falconer lapsed more than five years re-tests at 80% before re-licensure (OAC 800:25-7-29(c)-(d)).

Minimum age: 12 — Oklahoma prints no stricter state age floor in its falconry rule (OAC 800:25-7) or statute (29 O.S. §4-108), so the federal minimum of 12 applies.

Classes: Apprentice → General → Master

Birds by class & trapping

Legal raptors mirror the 50 CFR listings; golden eagles only with ODWC permission, and resident General/Master falconers may be authorized to take passage gyrfalcons (OAC 800:25-7-31(e)-(f)). Apprentice: the first bird must be a red-tailed hawk or American kestrel the apprentice actively helps trap, and apprentices may possess only red-tailed hawks, American kestrels or Harris's hawks — one of the few states allowing Harris's hawks below General. A second bird may arrive by transfer no sooner than six months after the first capture.

Eyasses April 15 – July 31, General/Master only, max two per licensee, leaving at least two young in the nest (one for Buteo); removing eggs is prohibited. Passage birds Aug 1 – May 31 — one of the longest passage windows in the country. Nonresidents are capped at 50% of Oklahoma's annual peregrine allotment. Birds lost less than 30 days may be retrapped at any time.

Notes from the official sources

Regulation of record: OAC 800:25-7 Part 7 (Falconry) and 29 O.S. §4-108. Facilities and equipment must pass a Department inspection before any bird is possessed (800:25-7-30); take of any state or federally listed threatened species needs prior ODWC approval.
