First-year fees
Ask the agency — IDFG lists the falconry permit (valid 3 years) in its license schedule; the online fee table was unavailable at check date
The IDFG website was under scheduled maintenance when this row was verified (2026-11-03); confirm the current permit fee with IDFG before applying.
Exam & minimum age
Exam: 80% to pass. The Idaho falconry exam (≥80%) is required if you have not held an Idaho falconry permit or equivalent within the past five years, or are a new U.S. resident or visitor.
Minimum age: 12 — Permit issuance verifies the federal age, experience and other prerequisites for each class (IDAPA 13.01.14).
Classes: Apprentice → General → Master
Birds by class & trapping
Eagle falconry and peregrine capture permits are Master-only. Capture is capped at two wild raptors per calendar year per permit; adults (1 year or older) are limited to American kestrels and great horned owls. Bald eagles may not be used for falconry.
Immature raptors of open species may be captured year-round; adult kestrels and great horned owls only August 1 – end of February. Peregrine capture is a separate permit with its own application window and season (May 1 – Aug 31 in recent years).
Notes from the official sources
Facilities and equipment must pass inspection before any possession. Nonresident visitors: up to 30 days/year without an Idaho permit; longer stays need the Idaho exam (within five years) plus a temporary permit. Falconers moving to Idaho have 30 days to obtain an Idaho permit.
